Last year, all Federal and State dollars to sustain the Pennsylvania T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship Program were eliminated. Several PA legislators are working to invest again in PA’s early care and education teachers. The T.E.A.C.H. Senate Bill 1501 is now available online. To review the Bill, visit http://goo.gl/oxvsl

T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship Program raises the level of teaching expertise—and in doing so ensures high-quality early care and education for children throughout Pennsylvania. The T.E.A.C.H. Bill was referred to the Education Committee on April 16, 2012.

Children’s Village knows firsthand that we have improved the quality of our classrooms and programs here because our teachers are competent and highly skilled—thanks in part to scholarships that had been available through T.E.A.C.H.

The effectiveness of an early childhood education program is linked to quality. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) sets the highest standard—and Children’s Village is committed to this exceptional level. Maintaining accreditations to assure educational excellence is a tenet of our core values. Achieving NAEYC accreditation, a voluntary process, demands rigorous preparation and extensive resources.

“We are using the Fels Fund grant to engage a Quality Improvement Coordinator from the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC). The comprehensive effort will establish a framework for continuous improvement in the years ahead. We are so grateful that the Fels Fund is supporting us in this critical effort that will impact every child and family we serve,” says Mary Graham, Children's Village Executive Director

The Samuel S. Fels Fund was founded in 1935 by Sam Fels, a Philadelphia philanthropist. The Fund is a private foundation with broad interests in community, education, and arts and culture.

The preschoolers enjoyed learning the proper way to approach and pet LANIE--who was just as curious about the children as they were about her! Warmest thanks to LANIE'S owner, Emily Reich, and friend, Tonja Deviney, for sharing LANIE with the children. Scroll down to view photographs.

Preschoolers in classroom 302 are learning firsthand about PETS, the current Tools of the Mind curriculum theme. In the process, they also are discovering more about the role of a veterinarian.

On March 23, preschoolers met Great Dane SCOOBY, a certified and registered therapy dog. SCOOBY's owners, Bob and Lois Gorbsky, shared information about SCOOBY's eating, exercise, and training habits. Children enjoyed asking questions--especially about his very loud bark--and shaking SCOOBY's paw.

On March 27, the children met pugs MR. CHIP and FRANKIE, also therapy dogs, and their owner, Britt Levi, a student at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. Children took turns using a stethoscope to listen to MR. CHIP's heart. They also examined the anatomy of a dog using a special plastic model and reviewed picture books of different breeds of dogs. Scroll down to view pictures.
